Physical Education

In Years 7 and 8 students follow a programme of activities which enables them to develop skills, communication, teamwork and decision making. Activities include football, netball, hockey, badminton, orienteering, fitness, dance, cricket, athletics, rounders and rugby. Students have the opportunity to develop skills in extra-curricular activities including competing against local schools in the Charnwood Schools Sports Competition and county schools tournaments

In recent years, there have been developments in the PE curriculum. Currently in Year 9, students opt to take GCSE PE or OCR National. All students in Year 9 also have Core PE. In Year 10 and Year 11 students are guided  towards either GCSE PE, Cambridge National, Level 1/2 in Sport Studies or Core PE.

OCR GCSE PE- This course is assessed in two parts; theoretical exam worth 60% of the overall marks, written coursework worth 10% and 3 practical activities worth 30% of the overall mark. Students will sit two written exams at the end of Year 11.Theoretical topics covered include; Anatomy & Physiology, biomechanics , socio-cultural issues in sport and Sports Psychology.

CAMBRIDGE NATIONAL LEVEL 1/2 IN SPORTS STUDIES- This is a four-unit course, which includes practical assessment, a written exam and coursework to do with current issues in sport. Students will be assessed in the following unit ; Contemporary Issues in Sport, Developing Sports Skills, Sports Leadership and Sport and the Media.

CORE PE – Students continue to develop their skills in invasion games, net and wall games, athletics and striking and fielding games. They also have the opportunity to develop leadership and officiating skills through Sports Education and Sports Leadership. We actively encourage pupils to take on other roles than performer to inspire students to engage in a healthy active lifestyle following their time at Humphrey Perkins School.
