Westminster Debate

30th September 2016

Report from Mrs Kirby - Assistant Head

On the first day of our Summer holiday four young people from Humphrey Perkins set off to Westminster to debate the value of Religious Education within our curriculum. The four pupils, Hebe Jackson (Head Girl), Joshua Thory Rau (Year 11), Beth Dring (Year 9) and Ailsa Kirby (Year 9) had two weeks to prepare their speeches. All four pupils spoke exceptionally well, holding their ground with sixth formers from large public schools. Nicky Morgan visited solely to meet the pupils from Humphrey Perkins, again our pupils spoke in a balanced and articulate manner when sharing their views of the curriculum.

Special thanks have to go to Mrs Dring who came into school to support our pupils in writing their speeches. Both myself and Debbie Phillips, who supported the trip, were extremely proud of our young people. For pupils to be able to say they have debated in Parliament is quite an achievement.
